BIOGRAPHY

Born in Minas Gerais Célia Mara grew up with music. Macumba-drums and Samba-rhythms have formed her musicstyle. At the age of 16 she made her debut on stage with her own compositions performed in Belo Horizonte, centre of the new Brazilian music. Her appearances followed in major jazz clubs, TV, theatres and festivals from Belo Horizonte to Rio, São Paulo and Salvador. In 1990, after a concert in Bahia, she was invited to play in Switzerland. She started performing in small jazz clubs and festivals. But most importantly she discovered the European jazz scene and worked for the first time with European musicians. She played frequently, whether in Germany, in Italy or in Austria. But her visa expired and didn’t get renewed. She had to go to Portugal, and started again playing in small clubs. In 1992 Célia Mara composed her first, European hot, melancholy Samba Jazz Fusions, and played with Austrian musicians. Soon, she became wellknown and performed at international festivals, as opening group for Abdullah Ibrahim, Airto Moreira & Flora Purim, played her own concerts. To get new energy, she returned to Brazil in 1996, back to Samba and rhythm with funk and jazz on her mind. In Salvador she composed and recorded the new songs for her CD, “Hot Couturedo Samba". The arrangements were made by Leitieres Leiter. In the end of 1996 she came back to Vienna. In 1997 she founded the band “potênciaX”. They performed at the major festivals in Austria, presenting an independent style. Samba meets funk and jazz, original brazilian grooves mix with sophisticated instrumental interpretations of an european music concept. In 1997 she completed the production of the CD "Hot Couture do Samba", which opend her the way to the Austrian Broadcasting Company (national Radio & TV). In 1998 and 1999 she performed "Hot Couture do Samba" on the main Austrian festivals and concert-halls. In 1999 she produced the benefit CD "Necessàrio", a collection of musica popular brasileira, with critical songs of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque and herself.  “Necessário” is a live, recording of the benefit concert "Jazz for Kosovo". All songs Célia Mara presented are dedicated to the question of human rights. In 2000 she has been elected in Austria’s Concerto-Poll best world music artist. In 2001 she started to experiment with an Apple G3 and Logic. In 2002 the first Logic Release: the soundtrack to "Salgueiro Queens". Célia Mara goes back to Brazil again, teaching in name of UNESCO at creative industries workshop for latin american artists 2003 in Salvador. In Austria, together with Silvia Santangelo Jura, she won the “Herta Pammer Preis 2003“ for innovative social and global education.Celia Mara released her new album “Bastardista” iin 2005 witch stormed the european world music charts from the beginning and is conquering the hearts of an international audiance.

Célia Mara nacque a Minas e crebbe con i ritmi della Samba e della Macumba. A 16 anni debuttò sulle scene con delle composizioni proprie a Belo Horizonte, centro della nuova musica brasiliana. Seguirono apparizioni nei più importanti jazz clubs, nelle tv, nei teatri e nei festivals, da Belo Horizonte a Rio, San Paolo e Salvador. Nel 1990 dopo un concerto a Bahia fu invitata a suonare in Svizzera in piccoli jazz clubs e festivals. Questo le diede la possibilità di conoscere il jazz europeo e di lavorare con musicisti europei. Iniziò a suonare frequentemente in Germania, Italia ed in Austria. Non le venne rinnovato il visto e dovette trasferirsi in Portogallo e ricominciare a suonare in piccoli clubs. Nel 1992 compose il suo primo Samba Jazz Fusions europeo e iniziò a suonare con musicisti austriaci. Subito divenne famosa e suonò in festivals internazionali come gruppo d’apertura per Abdullah Ibrahim, Airto Moreira & Flora Purim. Nel 1996 tornò in Brasile per cercare nuovi stimoli, tornando ai ritmi di samba, funk e jazz. A Salvador compose il nuovo cd “Hot Couturedo Samba”. Gli arrangiamenti vennero fatti da Leitieres Leiter. Alla fine del 1996 tornò a Vienna e, nel 1997, fondò il gruppo “Potenciax”. Si esibì nei maggiori festivals con uno stile indipendente: la samba si mescola al funk, al jazz, ai ritmi originali brasiliani mixati con sofisticate interpretazioni strumentali europee. Nel 1997 completò la produzione del cd “Hot Couture do Samba”, che le aprì la strada alla televisione ed alla radio nazionale austriaca. Nel 1998 e nel 1999 lo propose nei più importanti festivals e sale da concerto austriache. Nel 1999 produsse il cd “Necessàrio”, una raccolta di musica popolare brasiliana, con la partecipazione di Caetano Veloso, Gilberti Gil e Chico Buarque. Il cd è un live, registrato durante il concerto “Jazz for Kosovo”. Tutte le sue canzoni hanno come tema i diritti umani. Nel 2000 fu eletta miglior artista musicale al Concerto-Poll in Austria. Nei primi anni del 2000 iniziò le sperimentazioni con la musica elettronica, ne è un esempio “Salgueiro Queens”. Célia Mara tornò ancora una volta in Brasile, a Salvador, dove insegnò in nome dell’UNESCO in workshop per artisti. In Austria, insieme a Silvia Santangelo Jura, vinse l’ “Herta Pammer Preis 2003“ per innovativi progetti sociali ed educativi. Nel 2005 produce il suo nuovo album Bastardista che scala le classifiche europee conquistando il cuore del pubblico.
