BIOGRAPHY

"Oscar D'Leon, ""El Leon de la Salsa"", was born in the Caracas' neighbourhood of Etamin where he began to show interest in percussion instruments and to sing at social activities as a young child.
His capacity to improvise, the texture of his voice and his intense love for the music, make Oscar D'Leon a born ""sonero"" in the best Latin tradition. Today, his name is recognized all over the World, but in his home country of Venezuela, he is an idol, not only as a singer and musician, but also as a self made man of humble origin who overcame his circumstances and achieved fame and fortune. Oscar D'Leon is possibly the most recognized Venezuelan artist outside his own country.
He was influenced by the great masters of Cuban music, especially by ""soneros"", Beny More and La Sonora Mantacera. His other influences come from the New York sound of the 60's, particularly Eddie Palmieri and the Fania generation. Besides being a great sonero, Oscar D'Leon is an extraordinary showman, an entertainer who takes charge of the stage even before singing his first words, and he moves with the easiness of a professional dancer.
Oscar D'Leon has recorded more than 50 albums, including several Gold Records, received numerous award and honours, and will be touring again in 1996 with his 15 piece Venezuelan orchestra."

Oscar D'Leon all’ inizio della sua carriera venne influenzato dai grandi maestri della musica cubana come Benny Morè e dall’ "Orchestra Sonora Matancera" e in seguito fecero parte della sua formazione musicale anche le sonorità impostesi a New York negli anni sessanta da grandi come il maestro Eddie Palmieri e gli artisti della Fania. Il suo esordio sulla scena è il risultato di caso e coraggio uniti al talento. Raccontano le cronache che, capitato in un locale notturno,si offrì di sostituire un’ orchestra appena licenziata. Oscar D'Leon, che a quel tempo era un'autista di taxi, non aveva un'orchestra, convocò il suo amico trombettista César Monge e così il gruppo si formò, Oscar cantava e suonava il basso, uno strumento che aveva imparato a suonare come autodidatta. Così il 15 marzo del 1973 nacque "La Dimension Latina". Riscossero grande successo e vennero ingaggiati per realizzare un disco, ”pensando en ti” fu il primo singolo di successo. Con il tempo il sodalizio si sciolse ed Oscar formò la sua orchestra :"La Salsa Mayor" e con essa incise l’album che lo consacrò definitivamente al successo :“El Mas Grande”. Eccezionale showman, Oscar domina con grande naturalezza il palcoscenico, la sua capacità di improvvisare è leggenda e sfoggia un’ abilità nella danza da professionista navigato. Oscar D'Leon ha inciso oltre 50 albums, raccogliendo una decina di Dischi d'Oro e numerosi premi e riconoscimenti..
