To fusses texts, harmonies, rhythm, cadence, to hand in a musical product of wide aesthetic, has scored plenty of cuts heating the heels of Cuban dancers for 30 years, are some qualities that merit JUAN FORMELL Y LOS VAN VAN from other orchestras.

In the Cuban musical history, JUAN FORMELL is recognized as one of the most profiles singer songwriters. His catalogue makes critic, specialists, and musicians all world over, feel impressed, as well as influenced by his work. Formell begins as troubadour at age 16, after receiving the influence of his father (an awarded music teacher) and study with high calibre players such as Odilio Urfé , Socarrás and Orestes López "Cachao".
As this time, Rock and Roll, The Mexican Trio Los Panchos, Benny Moré and Chapottin, for just mentioning a few, influenced the sound of this adolescence. His professional debut takes place with Guillermo Rubalcaba, Charanga, later on Peruchins -two personalities of Cuban piano school- . Years after, he begins doing his own arrangements. With pianist and composer, Carlos Faxas, Formell produces for singers as Elena Burke - one of the leading voices of "filin movement".

In 1967, Formell scored a hit at Elio Revé Orchestra as bassist, composer and arranger. From this time, dancers remember El Martes, whit brings newer sounds to Charanga ensembles.

On December 4, 1969, VAN VAN makes his debut and the Cuban music catalogue enriches once more. Formell creates Songo Rhythm mixing Caribbean flavour with elements of jazz, rock and the unchallenged Son.
Electrics violins and piano, the typical Charanga sound of the flute, Afrocuban rhythms and the harmony of the voices similar to the trios; are in wide sense the timbre accomplished by JUAN FORMIELL Y LOS VAN VAN in all these years of tournées, recording, shows, festivals, music for the cinema, theatres plays and much more.

VAN VAN music is interprets by prestigious artists such as Rubén Blades, Harry Belafonte, Ray Barreto, El Gran Combo de Puerto Ríco, Roberto Roena, Vìcente Valdés, Latin Fever, Andy Montañés among many others.
JUAN FORMELL y LOS VAN VAN have toured United States of America, Holland, France, Spain, England, Italy, Germany, Japan, Belgium, Mexico, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Aruba, Guadalupe, Martinique, taking their instant party atmosphere to make dance multinational auditoriums.
Several documentary, films and video clips have been broadcaster with the musical support of VAN VAN phenomenon under the lead of JUAN FORMELL.

They have performed ALL ALONG Cuba. Their hegemony in the dancing music world is testified with more than 20 CDs, with about 150 compositions, and the breaking of selling records in every edition, crowned on top of National Hit.

Juan Formell e i Los Van Van hanno fatto ballare Cuba e la gente del mondo intero da più di 20 anni. Il loro direttore Juan Formell ha all'attivo 16 album e più di 150 composizioni. La loro musica è giustamente considerata la miglior espressione del più avanzato sound caraibico, che sa unire tradizione e moderne suggestioni. I problemi sociali e il quotidiano sono i temi principali delle loro canzoni. Per questa ragione, per la loro integrità e la salvaguardia dei valori che li hanno sempre contraddistinti, da anni sono gli ambasciatori ufficiali nel mondo della salsa e di tutto ciò che è musica cubana, son, danzon, songo e merengue. E questo senza mai cadere nella trappola della routine. Juan Formell è cresciuto artisticamente in un contesto decisamente favorevole; nato da una famiglia di musicisti, ha suonato con diverse formazioni: prima Formell solista dal 64 al 67, successivamente con l'orchestra di Elio Revé per due anni e infine con i Van Van. La sua attività di compositore vede l'inizio nel 1965. Grandi artisti come Ray Barretto, Harry Belafonte, gruppi come El Gran Combo de Puertorico, la Tipica 73 suonano la sua musica; il re della salsa Ruben Blades termina i suoi concerti con un titolo molto conosciuto del Van Van: "Muovete". La formazione comprende oltre ai due cantanti, Mario Valdes e Pedrito, quattro percussionisti, un bassista, un pianista, tre violinisti, un trombonista e due trombettisti: quattordici persone in tutto che, sicuramente, sono un bel vedere e soprattutto un bel sentire. I Los Van Van sono un'autentica macchina da ritmo che miscela con grande abilità i timbri afro della sezione ritmica con le cadenze jazz dei suoi fiati.
